Mallorca Preservation is a non-profit foundation committed to preserving the beauty and high environmental quality of Mallorca. 3rd Conscious Cinema Series
The 3rd Conscious Cinema Series will begin on September 24th with Wetlands, the Legacy of Luc Hoffmann, a documentary dedicated to the ornithologist and scientist Luc Hoffmann, a pioneer in the study and defense of wetlands. The film highlights the importance of these ecosystems, which are especially rich in biodiversity and fundamental for numerous species as well as for human well-being.
Following the screening, there will be a discussion with Carlota Viada, a biologist from WWF, and Juan Calvo, director of Aliança per l’Aigua, which will delve deeper into the importance of these ecosystems and the challenges they face in Mallorca.
At the end, light refreshments will be offered to foster a closer connection between attendees and speakers, answer questions, and create an informal space to share reflections and ideas on the issues raised during the session.
The second session, on October 7th, will be dedicated to Sharks of the Mediterranean: A Vanishing Kingdom. The documentary explores the disappearance of the great sharks of the Mediterranean, a sea that just a century ago was home to numerous species. Through the search for these animals, the film investigates the causes of their decline and questions whether they still survive in some corners of the Mediterranean.
The subsequent discussion will feature Biel Morey, marine biologist and co-founder of Save the Med, and Agustí Torres, president of SharkMed and professional photographer and documentary filmmaker, who will share their knowledge and experience about the marine environment and the situation of sharks in the Mediterranean.
At the end, a light snack will be offered to encourage a closer connection between attendees and speakers, answer questions, and create an informal space to share reflections and ideas on the issues raised during the session.
On October 21st, the film Kiss the Ground will be screened, focusing on soil regeneration through agriculture and its role in combating climate change. Through images, graphics, and various case studies, the documentary demonstrates how restoring soil health can contribute to carbon storage, ecosystem recovery, and the development of more resilient food systems.
Following the screening, a discussion will be held with Elena Baraza, PhD from the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB), and Miquel Serra, a field technician with APAEMA for over a decade. This discussion will delve deeper into the role of soil health, agriculture, and ecosystem regeneration in addressing current environmental challenges.

On November 3rd, L’Odissea del Vell Marí (The Odyssey of the Old Seaman) will be screened. This film combines live action and animation to tell the story of the struggle to recover one of the most endangered species on the planet: the Mediterranean monk seal. The story follows the work of a group of Spanish biologists who traveled to Cabo Blanco, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Mauritania, where the species found one of its last refuges. It showcases the efforts undertaken to promote its conservation and keep alive the possibility of its return to the Mediterranean waters.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with Núria Abad Rivas and Marta Hierro Bravo, the documentary's directors, along with Joan Mayol, an expert and pioneer in nature conservation in Mallorca. The discussion will delve into both the film's creation process and the current situation of the Mediterranean monk seal and the efforts being made to promote its conservation.
This final screening will also be special, as it will be part of the program for the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival, which will take place this year from October 28 to November 4.
